Love it or hate it, Hollywood is a major part of modern culture. It has helped to form the entertainment industry as we know it today. And while many see that as a problem due to the deification of celebrity and the drying well of creativity that exists in our world today, Hollywood is a place that has literally changed the world. There are, though, some intriguing facts about Hollywood that you might not know. Like what?
The Hollywood sign used to have a carer
Back in the 1920s, there was a person who lived in a small hut next to the famous Hollywood signs. He would be out there fixing lights, making sure that the Hollywood sign retained that famous glow and charm. Plans are in place to renovate and improve the sign further, but back in the day, there was an actual person who attended to the lights daily.
You can pay to have your Walk of Fame star
Got a spare five to six figures? Then you could get yourself a Walk of Fame star. These stars are part of the celebrity deification culture we mentioned, with people from the rich and famous movies and entertainment products produced in Tinseltown being immortalized in the form of these stars in the ground. Some people even have more than one star, like the eternal Frank Sinatra – he has three!
Hollywood was a fight against New Jersey patents
In New Jersey, Thomas Edison brought out a patent to do with filmmaking that chased many people to the Western part of the USA. Hollywood was able to build and grow its name and fame because people were looking to make films away from the patent that Edison owned in New Jersey. This was a big part of the reason why Hollywood was formed, and why it was able to thrive for so many years afterward.
The morse code tower still works
There is a tower within Hollywood that has been blinking out Morse code, spelling out Hollywood. It has done this for years, and it is believed that the tower was put together after a challenged writer asked local drunks for an idea of what he could do to get some kind of fame and attention. We do not know who put the Morse tower code up there, but we know that it not only exists but it still blinks away!
