Hard to Believe
Judith stood frozen, listening as a sharp-tongued woman hurled cruel remarks about the man Judith had come to know as a friend. Could it really be true? Was he actually homeless?

She never would have guessed it. But as she replayed their conversations in her mind, Judith felt a pang of regret. She had missed all the hints, and now it seemed too late to change anything.
Meet Judith
At 70, Judith Anderson was a widow who had learned to find joy in her golden years. She lived alone on the farm she and her late husband had bought together.

Though she cherished the peaceful rural life, it often left her feeling isolated. To cope with the solitude, Judith made regular trips into the city.
Nugget Enthusiast
Judith had a particular fondness for the chicken nuggets served at the local diner near her home. Visiting the diner became a daily ritual for her.

It was her way of escaping the quiet farm and connecting with others, even if just for a little while. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better than staying cooped up all day.
The Usual Routine
With no children or grandchildren to fill her days, Judith’s daily outings to the diner became her saving grace. Still, it wasn’t exactly what she longed for.

The staff recognized her and often chatted, but it wasn’t the same as sharing a meal with her beloved husband. She missed having a companion by her side.
The Bright Side
Like most things, Judith’s diner visits had their positives and negatives. Being naturally sociable, she relished the chance to interact with people.

Yet, there were days when her trips left her feeling down. It wasn’t because she wanted to retreat to her farm, but for a completely different reason.
The Lonely Moments
One drawback was the constant turnover of diner staff, which meant Judith didn’t always have someone familiar to talk to. Another was the way the diner reminded her of her late husband.

On those days, sorrow crept in, and Judith longed for company more than ever. She had no idea that comfort would soon come from someone who needed her just as much.
Eating Alone
Of all the things Judith disliked, dining by herself topped the list. She had never eaten alone before her husband’s passing.

Suddenly, she had to adjust to a new reality, and she despised it. Sitting solo at a table, watching the world go by, was a daily reminder of her loss. But things were about to take a turn.
A Day Like No Other
That morning, Judith had no inkling that her routine trip to town would transform her life.

She woke up feeling optimistic—the sun was shining, and she was determined to make the most of the day. Little did she know, surprises awaited her.
Someone New
After arriving at the diner and placing her usual order, Judith settled into her favorite booth. While waiting for her food, she scanned the room—and something caught her eye.

A man sat a few tables away, also alone, and he looked anything but happy.
Reaching Out
Judith took a moment to consider whether she was up for a conversation with a stranger. It didn’t take long for her to decide.

They both seemed to be craving company, so why not keep each other company? With that thought, Judith walked over to introduce herself.
Offer Accepted
The conversation was awkward at first, but the minute Judith invited the man to her table, his eyes lit up. Judith thought it was rather strange since no one could be that happy about having company. Could they?

If Judith only knew the truth. If only she knew who he really was. Then she would understand why he was so happy.
A Kind, Young Man
The man, who introduced himself as William, seemed to be delighted. He sat down across from Judith, and the two of them quickly started talking about anything they could think of.

The pair had a lovely time together, and Judith learned that William was a very kind and caring young man. But that didn’t mean he didn’t have secrets.
Enjoyable Meal
For the first time in a long time, Judith enjoyed her meal. She finally had the company of someone who was interested in what she had to say, and that made the day a special one.

When Judith left the diner that day, she had a smile on her face. But there was a deep sadness in her heart. Would she ever experience something like that again?
The Next Day
When Judith arrived at the diner the next day, she was anxious. She hoped it would be a repeat of the day before, but she knew the odds of that happening were slim.

However, as soon as she stepped inside, she saw William. He waved her over and looked incredibly happy about seeing her again. Were his intentions pure?
The Day After That
Judith was delighted by the fact that her days seemed to be a little brighter now that someone was eating with her. She adored the conversations she had with William, and it seemed like it would be a regular thing.

They met on a daily basis, and before long, Judith was sure it would be a regular thing.
A New Routine
Before long, her meetings with William became the new norm. They met and had lunch together every single day. And Judith really enjoyed that.

But at the end of the day, that would be her downfall. If Judith paid closer attention to what was being said, she would’ve known that William wasn’t as innocent as he seemed.
Getting Used To His Company
Judith not only loved the lunchtime company. She was getting used to it. It had gone so far that she expected it when she got in her car in the morning.

And that might’ve been what blinded her from the truth. If she didn’t need the company so badly, she might’ve been able to see past the facade.
Learning A Lot
What Judith didn’t realize was that she was the one doing the most of the talking. William did give her some information about him, but it was nowhere near enough for her to see the truth.

However, she did feel like she was learning a lot about the young man, and because of that, she was happy to share her stories. She knew how young people adored learning about the lives of older people.
Three Weeks Later
But one day, Judith was in for the surprise of a lifetime. When she arrived at the diner, William wasn’t there. This confused Judith as he was always waiting for her.

She looked around, thinking he might be sitting somewhere else, but the young man was nowhere to be seen. Has something happened to him?
Asking Questions
Judith waited for two whole hours, but William never came. She was starting to get concerned and thought the staff might know what happened to him.

So she went to one of the waitresses she knew and asked if William had been there that day. Unfortunately, no one had seen him since the day before.
A Snide Remark
As Judith was asking around, one of the customers stood up, and she wasn’t being nice about the situation at all.

“Why do you care about the whereabouts of a homeless man?” the rude customer asked. “If you asked any of the other patrons, we’d tell you that we’re glad to be rid of him.”
She Couldn’t Believe It
Judith stared at the woman, and she was sure the customer could see the shock that was written across her face. She never knew that William was homeless or that these people despised him.

But how could that be? How could she not realize that the man she was eating with on a daily basis was homeless?
If Only She Knew
There were so many questions passing through Judith’s mind. How could William afford to eat at the diner if he was homeless? Why didn’t he tell her about his situation? And why did he stop coming?

Judith wished she had the answers to those questions. But mostly, she just wished she knew what position he was in so she could help him.
Devastated
When Judith left the diner that day, she was heartbroken. She was prepared for a day filled with discussions and sweet memories of the past. But what she got was the complete opposite.

Instead of fun, she got devastation and more questions than she could begin to find the answers to. But what would the widow do about it? Would she forget about the man who brightened her days?
Concerned
A few more days had passed since Judith had last seen William, and she was starting to get concerned. The more she thought about the situation, the more worried she became.

But what could she do? With nothing more than a first name, she couldn’t get anywhere. But there had to be someone who knew something about him, right?
The Quest For Information
With that thought in mind, Judith returned to the diner and started asking around once more. What she learned was that his sister was working there during the time he visited. That’s how he managed to get the meals.

But she left the day before he disappeared, and all they had that could point Judith in the right direction was her phone number.
Finding Him
Judith immediately called the woman and asked where she could find William. His sister was reluctant at first, but once Judith explained who she was, the tension eased.

William’s sister told Judith that he usually stayed on 6th Street. One of the busiest streets in the city. And after hours of searching, Judith found the man she was looking for.
Telling The Truth
When Judith asked William what had happened, he decided it was time for her to hear the truth. He’d hit a rough patch in his life, and because of that, most of his family abandoned him.

It was only his sister who still cared, but her husband wouldn’t let William get anywhere near their home. So she snuck him in and fed him, but there was only so much she could do.
Heartbroken
William’s story left Judith heartbroken. He was just a young man who was trying to get a foot up in the world. But sadly, no one was willing to give him a chance, and because of that, he had to struggle through life.

That wasn’t something Judith wanted for the man who kept her company. And she planned on rectifying the situation right away.
An Offer He Couldn’t Refuse
Judith told William about her farm. It had fallen into disarray since she was too old to keep taking care of it. But a man his age could pull it back into shape.

She was even willing to pay him for his work. Plus, she would give him a cottage to stay in, and a nice warm meal would be waiting for him when he finished work. William was speechless.
