Did you know that over one hundred thousand birds fly into windows every year? Very sad, both for the bird and for you. Fortunately, there are simple ways to prevent this. We tell you what you can do.
Why do birds fly into windows?
Whether you have transparent or reflective windows, birds can't see them. The former is really not visible to the animals and the latter reflects the surroundings. Even in the case where windows face each other, it can appear to birds as if there is a free passage. Fortunately, there are ways you can prevent them from trying to fly through.
Tips
- Place hanging plants in front of your windows. Not only do they create an obstacle for birds, they instantly make your home a lot cozier. Win-win! Another option is to put furniture in front of the window.
- Put stickers on the glass. This can keep birds from recognizing your window as free passage.
- In addition to stickers, you can also choose to put a silhouette of a bird of prey on your window. In this case, the birds will think there is an enemy nearby, and (hopefully) turn around.
- Would rather not stick anything on your window? Then you can also use UV markers. To humans, the drawings are not visible, but to birds they are. Just make sure to remove the patterns when washing the window.
Still a bird against your window?
A bird that has flown against the window is often very drowsy after the accident. You can let it recover from the fright by putting it in a safe and cool place, such as a cardboard box. Then when the animal is back on its feet, you can release it. Does the animal not look healthy or do you have questions? If so, always call the animal ambulance.
